    And we're underway!

Tech inspection done, rally flag made, and no calamities as of yet.

    Here's Dmitriy's before picture:

Doesn't he look happy, comfortable, and well-rested? Can't wait for the after pics...

Riders meeting was fun, Tom and Mark went over some details. But the nitty-gritty isn't in front of us until 5 AM tomorrow morning. From the few tidbits that were shared, it sounds like this could be a fun one. They're all fun of course, but this one will be too. I liked the sound of some optional bonuses that could put big miles (1500+) into the day, and if they are feasible it may end up being what I look to do. With the 2 hours available of planning in the morning, there should be a little more time to optimize the plan so I'll have a little better idea of what I'm doing compared to some rallies in the past where I hop on the bike with a remarkably fuzzy conception of the plan.

    Some gratuitous bike shots:

    And pool shots:

We'll be back in that same place at 0500 for further instruction before starting the pain portion of the event.

    More pics right up here...

    The Calm Before the Storm

Well, I just checked and Alex is fast asleep ... well, he's snoring, so I'm assuming he's asleep and dreaming about winning the Cal24

I'm not sure I'm ready for the excitement. There are so many SPOT folks this year, it's going to be confusing if folks go in all different directions.

Good luck everyone and enjoy your few more hours of sleep.

    Morning Update

Well, Alex called in to let me know how things were going. He's riding with our friend Don Beaton. There seems to be 2 routes you can take. One keeps you in the Bay area (Colinga, then up to Napa). The other, if you want an adventure - Portland, OREGON!

Alex of course went for the OREGON adventure. It's worth a lot of points, but only if you manage to get the bonus out there and make it back in time.

The Bay Area route sounded like there were lots of familiar roads filled with all kinds of bonuses, but you'd have to collect a good portion of them for the points to add up to the one in Portland.

Looking at his SPOT, it looks like he's been on 5 this whole time. Must be a pretty boring ride! 5 is pretty long, flat, and not much to look at.

Let you know more, when I hear from Alex again.

    Lunchtime Update

Hello again! Alex called in again to let me know how things are going. He's been mainly on route 5 (highway) which could be considered boring on a motorcycle, but he's had to stay alert. He said that there are a lot of CHP on route 5 today. They aren't the Cal24 Police, but the real thing, so they've had keep their throttle hand in check.

Alex shared withe me the Bonus they are trying to get in Portland. For those who are familiar with the Cal24, you will all recognize the name Jeff Earls. He has won the Cal24 for the last 3 years. He isn't participating this year... rumor has it that he opted out because he will be riding in the Iron Butt this year which is taking place in 2 weeks. I think someone needs to talk to Jeff about Priorities! :teeth

Anyway, the Bonus in Portland is to become a member of the Jeff Earls Fan Club. Jeff lives in Portland and so they need to pay a visit to him, get their picture taken with him, along with obtaining an autograph, and that's the MEGA bonus!

Let you know more when I hear again from the folks on the road...

    Evening Update

Well, it looks from Alex's spot that he's made it to the bar where they meet up with Jeff Earls. It's the Lucky Lab Beer Hall on Quimby in Portland. The bonus is only open from 5:30-6:30, so it looks like they've made it.

I'm not sure what the plans are after their induction into the Jeff Earls Fan Club. I guess one route home is to go the same way they came (route 5), but maybe there are other bonuses out there they can snag on the way home.

Alex said he'd call again later once he has a plan put together. I sure hope the trip to Portland was worth it!

    Post Portland Bonus Update

Well, Alex just called in, but we couldn't really talk. The connection was terrible, so all I got was that he got the Bonus (well, let's hope there aren't any technical scoring issues... but assuming all is good, he got it) and is headed to a checkpoint.

This year the checkpoints aren't mandatory if you go over a certain number of miles (I think 1039 miles???). If you don't ride that many miles, you need to make the checkpoints. I think because he went to Portland, he'll make the mileage, but it looks like he's got time to head to the checkpoint and get a few more points by doing so. I didn't get where the checkpoint location is, so I'll have to ask when he calls again.

    Any News From Others?
Last year Razel called me periodically to let me know what was going on. No one's called this year except Alex, so I have no idea what the other folks are up to. I've looked at the various SPOT pages and a few folks did take the Bay Area route, but haven't heard what their bonuses were about.

Last year there were bras, lipstick, nail polish :rofl, and shooting involved. I'm curious as to what kinds of activities these folks got to do this year. And what about the Cal24 police? There were some good stories last year, so I'm wondering if anyone got caught again this year.

Well, I guess we'll hear tomorrow at the Banquet and hopefully those folks will write about their adventures here too.

    More than half way done!

Well it's a little after 8pm and the Cal24 is more than 12 hours complete! I just talked to Alex and he is 379 miles from the checkpoint, which is located in Napa. The checkpoint is worth beaucoup points and is open from 1 am to 3 am. He should easiliy make it and will still have time to pick up more bonuses before heading back to San Jose.

I just hope he avoids those space bunnies that usually appear around 4 am.

    Midnight Update

So Alex called to check in again. He's still on 5 heading to Napa. Dmitriy called Alex to let him know he had to get a new rear tire. Well, not exactly new... he stopped in at Thunderhill where AFM races were taking place today. One of his friends who is in AFM put a race take off onto Dmitriy's bike so that he could still finish the Cal24 rally. Crazy stuff! I guess needing a new tire during the rally doesn't mean you have to call it quits.

Dmitriy is doing this year's thread - Giant Muffler Man. Something like that. I guess there's this company called Big Giant Muffler and even though the store today in some locations is no longer a Big Giant Muffler store, the giant Muffler Man is still out front. There are like 7 or 8 of these non-Muffler stores that still have the Giant Muffler Man upfront and you have to go find them. I assume you take a pic of the Giant Muffler Man with your bike and flag in the picture. Each one you get doubles in bonus points so the last one is worth over 3000 points or something like that. Again, the cell phone connection wasn't the best.

Personally, I think the thread sounds pretty hard! The threads are usually always hard and I'm not sure they are ever worth going for due to the difficulty and low chance of actually getting the whole thread.

I think Alex's ETA for the Napa checkpoint is 2:30 am, so only 30 minutes to spare before the checkpoint closes. It's almost midnight and his last spot point was 11:50 pm which showed him just South of Shasta on route 5. Man, he must LOVE route 5!

I think I'm headed for bed. Although, I'll have the phone next to the bed... Alex has always called me in the middle of the night. I guess if he's not sleeping, I'm not either, so I'm going to catch a few ZZZzzs now while I can.

    Morning Update - They're home!

Well, as expected Alex did call me in the middle of the night. I can't remember how many times, but at least twice. He called shortly after he made the checkpoint in Napa. He got to the checkpoint at 2:45, so made it, but with only 15 minutes to spare.

At that point, Alex, Don, and Andy M decided to split into two groups. Don and Andy M decided to head to some bonuses in San Francisco. Alex decided to go for another adventure and headed for the yet to be named bonuses. Everyone got the list of bonuses at the start of the rally, however, they said that there were another set of bonuses that they would be handing out at 5 am at a parking lot off of route 17 in Santa Cruz. Since it was 3 am, Alex decided he could make it to the parking lot by 5 am if he took took 880 down to 17.

Well, I hope the extra trip down south worked out for Alex. I did hear from him this morning around 7:30 am. He's back and waiting to get scored. He didn't say whether the trip to get the extra unknown bonuses in the parking lot was worth it, but I'm sure I'll hear more when he comes home to crash before the banquet.

One thing I did forget to mention was that on his way back to CA from Portland, they hit an area with pouring rain. He said it was pretty scary stuff, but that he and Don got through it just fine. There was just all kinds of water on the road, along with cars splashing up the water and so it was a bit hazardous.

Rain in June? Another reason never to leave CA.

Well, according to Alex's SPOT, he got in at 6:40 am to the hotel. That's 20 minutes early, so it leads me to believe he must have gotten what he wanted down south and came in to San Jose to finish off the rally.

Hopefully the extra bonus part allowed Alex to ride on some more motorcycle-friendly road. Else, his rally was pretty much made up of Highways... take that back, it was pretty much just Route 5. Again, he must really LOVE that highway!

I'm sure Alex will tell you in great detail, after he's slept a bit, his adventure first hand...
